Shugri is a first time author with her book “The Last Nomad”, which was published this year in 2021. It is a remarkable and inspiring true story that stuns with raw beauty about one woman’s resilience, her courageous journey from Somalia to America and her family’s lost way of life. Born in Somalia, a spare daughter (the middle child of 10) was sent at age 6 to live with her grandmother in the Somali desert. When the civil war broke out she had to flee with her family to Canada, via Kenya and lives in Sonoma County today, married to an Ethiopian and has 3 children. She went to nursing college in her twenties and loves her “day job” while she continues a long Somali tradition of story telling.
